Candle Care

A little care goes a long way. Follow these guidelines to burn safely, protect your space, and get the longest, cleanest, and most fragrant life from every Ember Within candle.

Candle Safety First

Please read and follow these safety directions every time you burn a candle.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never burn a candle while sleeping.
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Always burn on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable such as curtains, bedding, paper, or greenery.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans, and air currents, which can cause uneven burning and a high flame.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris at all times.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid and hot.
  • Stop burning when about half an inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
  • Leave a few inches of space between multiple burning candles.

Getting the Best Burn

The First Burn Matters Most

The first time you light a candle, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing. This usually takes about one hour for every inch of the candle diameter. Setting a full melt pool on the first burn prevents tunneling, where the candle burns straight down the middle and wastes the wax around the sides.

Every Time You Light

  • Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before every burn. A trimmed wick gives a clean, steady flame with minimal soot.
  • Limit each burn session to three to four hours. Longer sessions can overheat the vessel and create excess soot.
  • Let the candle cool and fully solidify before relighting or moving it.

Trimming and Wick Care

  • Always trim the wick before lighting, using a wick trimmer or scissors.
  • Remove any wick debris or trimmings from the wax before you light.
  • Keep the wick centered and upright; gently reposition it while the wax is soft, never while it is lit.
  • If the flame becomes too tall or flickers heavily, extinguish it, let it cool, trim the wick, and relight.

Wickless Candles and Candle Warmers

Our wickless candles are made to be used with a candle warmer only. They have no wick and are never lit with a flame.

  • Place the wickless candle in an electric candle warmer or a tea-light warmer designed for candles.
  • The gentle heat melts the wax and releases the fragrance with no flame and no soot.
  • Follow your warmer manufacturer instructions, and never leave a warmer on unattended or within reach of children and pets.
  • Turn the warmer off and let the wax cool before handling.

Room Sprays

  • Shake gently, then mist into the air or over soft furnishings as desired.
  • Avoid spraying directly onto polished wood, screens, or delicate fabrics, and test an inconspicuous area first.
  • Keep away from eyes and open flame, and store out of reach of children.

Diffusers

  • Place your diffuser on a protected surface, as the oils can mark or damage finishes.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets, and away from open flame.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the fragrance over time.

Storing Your Candles

  • Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can soften the wax and fade the fragrance.
  • Keep the lid on when not in use to protect the scent and keep out dust.
  • Store upright so the wick stays centered.

Troubleshooting

Tunneling

If the candle burns down the center and leaves wax on the sides, it likely did not reach a full melt pool on an early burn. Allow a longer, full melt pool on the next burn to help even it out.

Sooting or Smoking

Usually caused by an untrimmed wick or a draft. Extinguish, let it cool, trim the wick to a quarter inch, move away from drafts, and relight.

Mushrooming Wick

A small carbon tip on the wick is normal. Simply extinguish, let it cool, and trim it away before the next burn.

Weak Scent Throw

Give the candle a full melt pool, and remember that smaller rooms hold fragrance better than large, open, or drafty spaces.

A Note on Made by Hand

Every Ember Within candle is hand-poured in small batches from a clean soy-paraffin blend. Slight variations in color, texture, or surface are natural characteristics of a handmade candle, not defects, and they do not affect burn quality.
